What do you think? Some really great projects in there! I hope you will find lots to interest you. I may add some further tutes as we go along depending on how it progress and who else I might persuade to join in the fun!
I know that many people who read blogs and who may follow these tutorials will not have a blog - so I have set up a group on Flickr where you can upload photos of projects you make from these tutorials. Joining Flickr is free and it's a great resource for sewing and quilting people. The group is here - pop over and join. There is also a discussion forum in the group where questions can be asked or general chat. It would be so much fun to see what you make from these tutes and how people interpret each project with their fabric choices.
To kick-start your sewing fun, I have a little giveaway. Yes, a giveaway!
One of the big problems I had when I started sewing first was gathering enough of a selection of scrap fabrics to play with. My first few projects were quite limited until I bought a couple of scrap bags from Ebay and then once I started to make things, I generated quite the selection of scraps! So, I have put together 3 little scrap packs to giveaway today from my overflowing scrap baskets. All are roughly the same, content wise and contain a mixture of sizes, colours and shapes of cotton fabrics (mostly quilting weight, some poplins), along with some felt scraps for the needle book project and some varied size scraps of batting too, for when we move onto quilting. There should be enough there to get you started and to help out with some of the projects which might require a selection of fabrics. I am happy to send these anywhere - international entries are welcome!
I am giving away 2 packs from this post - just leave a comment on the post to enter. Any comment will do - tell me why you want to get started sewing or why you love sewing! You do not have to have a blog to comment - if you don't, just click the "anonymous" option in the comment box and anyone can leave one. Please make sure to leave your email address in your comment in the following format: fairyfacedesigns (at) gmail (dot) com. The giveaway will remain open until Monday 9th January at 9pm (Irish time). I will announce the winners next week using Random number generator. If I can't get in touch with you by email I will have to redraw.
The 3rd pack I will give away from my Facebook page. Head over there for details of how to enter. You can enter on both competitions to maximise your chances but there will only be 1 pack per winner, so if the same person wins in 2 places, I will redraw for one of the prizes.
I do hope that you will join us and have some fun while you learn. Please feel free to leave questions or comments on the posts as we go and I or the guest poster will do our best to answer.
Enjoy!
*** This giveaway is now closed.***
oh have been waiting on this all week - new years resolution was to use the sewing machine I bought last year - I have only used once and am determined this year to eventually start on my patchwork quilt!!! natcaljac@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI'm a sewer who hasn't really sewed since school. I'm looking forward to following your tutorials and gaining some confidence.

ReplyDeleteThis is heaven cannot wait to start!!! I love the feeling of producing something that I have made and is nit mass produced. Any one can do it if you give it a go! Fi
ReplyDeleteI am so excited for this! I just started sewing again last year (previously, I had only done the basic stuff they teach in public school) and then, not very well. I WANT to love sewing, but I often find myself discouraged because I feel like I just don't really have much guidance or direction. I am hoping this will instill the confidence and instruction that is needed to become successful at sewing and get me headed in the right direction for a new hobby. Thanks for allowing me this opportunity!
ReplyDeleteA great selection of tutes there S! It's going to be a great series! Jxo
ReplyDeleteThis looks fun! A great idea!
ReplyDeleteSarah, this is just the push I've needed. I used to make my own clothes which I loved as what I had was always the latest fashion but my own take on it or a different material and I was the envy of my friends. I love to make bags and this year I want to make an outfit for myself. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThose tutorials look like fun! Lots to learn! :)
ReplyDeleteI love sewing, but am not that good at it and would love to get better :) so these tutorials will be a great incentive to get sewing better than before, thank you :) patricia.payne@sky.com
ReplyDeleteAs a sewer I am excited about this series of tutorials. I love to learn new skills and see how others do things, a lot of what I know I have worked out myself so I sometimes do things the long way. Any short cuts gratefully learnt.
ReplyDeleteI just love to sew. I dont think that there is anything better to do with one's free time than to create something awesome through the art of sewing. And I love creating new things for family and friends. Handmade is the way to go.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for these to start, have never sewed in my life and managed to persuade dh to get me a sewing machine for Christmas, think he's sorry now as i am eyeing up all his clothes to rip apart to practice on. Would love to win, but don't want to leave my e-mail address publicly.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to the different things we can make from the tutorials. I have made a couple of things before but am looking forward to proper guidance.
ReplyDeleteWell done Sarah! This sounds so fun. Don't put me into the draw as I would love somoene who is just starting out to win. I've joined the flickr group and will definitely be following along!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this Sarah! Some of my best blogging buddies on that list :-)
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to starting these tutorials, I've got myself a wee machine and can do the basics, but looking forward to leardning lots and making beautiful items for my home :-)
ReplyDeleteEmma
I'm just getting back to blog reading after the holidays and kids resuming school and so glad that I didn't miss this!! What a wonderful idea and it looks like you have a great roster of bloggers and projects lined up!! And it's v. thoughtful of you to give away scrap bags of fabric. I'm all set with fabric right now so if Mr. Random Generator picks me by some rare chance, then pick again for someone else to have. {By the way, why is "he" always referred to as "Mr." Random Generator?? Just wonderin'} Thanks for offering this great series!!
ReplyDeleteI was given a new machine last yr, It's still unused! These tutorials will be the kick start i need to learn.
ReplyDeleteLove to sew because it is so creative nad I love to decorate the house with handmade stuff! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI'm sooo excited about these tutorials!!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you my dear! This series will be fun to see and those talented people you have lined up, wow!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like lots of fun! I could use some stash so thanks for the giveaway! Hello from Michigan!
ReplyDeletebutler83ataoldotcom
Thank you for the chance to win the scraps. I love sewing (mostly quilting) because it is a very productive hobby. I love to give gifts of "hugs" of quilts. I love to make them personal for the receiver. Can't wait to see your sewing classes!
ReplyDeleteI love sewing scrappy things with my neice. I always need more scraps for a new project, but don't get out to town much. Thanks for the chance to win your giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be a fabulous resource! Really looking forward to reading it all and trying a few things out :-)
ReplyDeleteAm impressed by the list of projects. Had planned on going to a nightclass for a refresher course, but fate jumped in under the guise of FairyFace Designs, so the nightclass list has been ceremoniously dumped!!!!! carrabella10@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI've had a sewing machine for 8 years and and apart from lending it to my mum and my daughter, it only comes out for the odd bit of hemming. I would love to get started with some proper sewing, I find it all so confusing, so I'm looking forward to learning some basics from your tutorials - and of course a bag of fabric scraps to would be a wonderful help too!
ReplyDeleteI loves scrap bag!! Thx for the chance. Can't wait for the tutorials and great tips!!
ReplyDeleteI loves sewing because I'm proud of the stuffs that are handmade by me. I feel very happy and proud to sew the handmade stuffs and also given to my friends.
Thanks for the chance to win! I sew, but I'm always looking for new techniques and projects to advance my (self-taught) skills. It's nice to finish a project and know that you made it yourself. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I am mostly self taught, so hopefully I will be able to try out some of these. I love to sew because it is a creative outlet that is also practical.
ReplyDeleteLisaandmariahcreations(at)gmail(dot)com
Great idea, thanks for sharing! Can't wait to follow along! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Even though I do sew I know that I need lots of improvment and this is just what I need to get motivated with it, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI've been sewing for years, but I stick to the simple straight seams and skip anything with a zipper, or anything "extra" in the pattern, I would love to go that extra mile and actually LEARN to do those things that I should learn but tend to skip!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the tuts coming up, really looks like a great line up. And I love scraps really really love scraps so a huge thank you for sharing some of your yummy ones :) I'll be joining the flickr group ;)
ReplyDelete-annabelle
I am getting back into sewing because I want to start making some things for my little girl who is 20 months old.
ReplyDeletemollie_towery@hotmail.com
This is a great idea. I'm looking forward to participating!
ReplyDeleteI love that I've found a new creative outlet through sewing and, as I very quickly became a fabriholic, I love going to fabric stores. My scrap selection is still pretty small though as I haven't been at it for that long.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to the garment making portion as I haven't made anything for myself to wear since I was in high school. I've been sewing regularly for about 4 years, though, mostly making things for my kids or quilting. Thanks for the giveaway! :)
ReplyDeleteI find sewing very therapeutic! There are still tons I have to learn...definitely looking to garment making parts!
ReplyDeleteI have had to give my classes up to go to the gym to get fit for and operation so i will enjoy joining in and continuing to learn, thank you xxxx
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to learn how to sew more things, I really enjoy giving people handmade gifts! Looking forward to this!
ReplyDeletecynbri85(at)gmail(dot)com
Thank you for all the work you have done in setting up these lessons
ReplyDeleteNolene
grandmanolene@gmail.com
This is going to be such fun. The choice of tutorials is wonderful, I can't wait to start. It wouldn't surprise me if my little ones don't join in, there's something for each one to do.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn
Oh, so looking forward to this! Thanks for the chance to win some scraps!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea. Such a great selection of tutorials. Also thanks for the chance to enter the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteellabella@live.co.uk
I love to sew! I have recently started to sew things other than just quilts and am so proud of everything that I make. Thanks for posting the tutorials and the great giveaway!
ReplyDeletekatie.m.hall@gmail.com
What a great list of tutorials - I can't wait!!
ReplyDeleteI love handmade quilts and various types of stitchery and always have. I learned basics of quilting in Girl Scouts many years ago and fell in love with it, but was unable to continue for reasons out of my control. In high school I took a sewing class, but, again, was unable to continue honing my skills, so my skillset is very basic. I am looking forward to increasing my knowledge and creating a quilt for my infant granddaughter and these tutorials should make that possible! cls_angel1969@att.net
ReplyDeleteI love that you're doing this and look forward to the posts! I started sewing so I could make things!! Quilts mainly. Not working *ahem*, looking after the kids is great and rewarding but I wanted something more tangible. Sewing really does satisfy me and I love giving people things I've made myself :)
ReplyDeleteYummy scraps!
I am so excited about your series this year. It's great for a beginner like me. My email is heidster7 (at) hotmail (dot) com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am fairly new to quilting, so I could really use the Scrap Pack for starting these projects. sher_henry(at)sbcglobal(dot)net
ReplyDeleteThis is by far one of my favorite sewing blogs! I've been inspiored by so many of your projects :) I've jumped into quilting with both feet and I am having a blast!
ReplyDeleteI have only recently started sewing and I can't wait to get started with these tutorials.
ReplyDeletekatemck(at)hotmail(dot)com
This giveaway would be so helpful. I have only been quilting for a year and my biggest problem has been having enough fabric or scraps on hand for a project. I seem to always be either online or at the fabric store buying material. This can get expensive. I try to use what I have but sometimes that just doesn't work.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fab collection of tutorials :o) Don't worry about putting me in the draw though, it would be great for a beginner starting out to win them :o)
ReplyDeleteI'm a new sewer so I don't have many scraps yet. I'm hoping to build a collection soon though!
ReplyDeletemmm these look nice....Looking forward to starting these lessons!
ReplyDeleteThis will help me so much! Thank you :) I love everything u post, I love bright colours and the playfull of the fabrics, I bought myself a used sewing machine last month and been trying it out (i never done it before in my life), hopefully soon I will be able to do a bit more and start collecting fabric stash to play more :)

I made my first quilt 7 years ago when I was pregnant with my first baby. I've been hooked ever since! I LOVE scrap fabric.
ReplyDeleteI realised last year that my life was being swallowed by the television, and that sewing and making things was as good a raison d'etre as any other (and probably better than most:-). I'm looking forward to the tutorials!
ReplyDeletei love sewing, because it's so creative and i look forward to all these tutorials because i can brush up on some skills! thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm "sew" looking forward to this!!!! started sewing with your quiltalong and am hooked now.
ReplyDeletefiona dot roche at mail dot com
I've always wanted to get in to sewing, and seeing that I am expecting a baby this summer, I thought now would be the perfect time to get started with some DIY projects!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah. I'm really looking forward to this series. I very much enjoyed your QAL last year. I really like the feeling that I am sewing with others. The bonus is that my sewing should improve too. Di xo
ReplyDeletediane (dot) gilmore (at) gmail (dot) com.
I definitely need a refresher course. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeletemare460 at gmail dot com
Oh - I would love to win some of your scraps! They look wonderful!. I have just decided to start quilting and sewing again after a seven-year hiatus (work, family obligations, etc...). Now I have the time, but no fabric to play with, so this is a perfect giveaway for me!! Thanks for the chance to win and for the tutorials.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to learning some new things. This will help me with my resolution to make time for sewing!
ReplyDeleteelisaesteve@sky.com
The tutorials sound like a neat way to learn some new things
ReplyDeleteWould love to win this as I have been wanting to learn to sew for as long as I can remember and a bag of scrap material would help me no end in learning the basics. Can't wait to learn some new skills and looking forward to following your blog x (gemmaandkarl@yahoo.co.uk)
ReplyDeleteAlways looking for more variety in my scraps!
ReplyDeleteI love sewing because it's a hobby where you're creating things while you're practicing and learning.
ReplyDeleteI love to sew as my relaxation and reward for all the my mothering duties. I get to see a finished item and it makes my heart sing to know that I am being creative and giving things that have been made with love. I'd love some interesting and different scraps to play with :)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea Sarah! Perfect for beginners and fun for veterans.
ReplyDeleteOh I am so excited for this. I can't wait to get sewing.
ReplyDeleteYou awesome collector of great tutorials!!
ReplyDeleteI've been sewing for longer than I can remember, I just enjoy it so much. Would love some more scraps.I look forward to all the tutorials that are coming.
ReplyDeletelyn.robyn.smith@gmail.com
This is going to be great fun!!! Thanks so much Sarah for putting it together. I enjoy sewing because it is the one place in my life where I can be creative. There is nothing creative about my job (Accountant) so I need creativity in my day. Thanks for a great giveaway and a great series.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, what a great list of tutorials coming up.
ReplyDeleteI only recently started quilting but I have to say that I am hooked now and find sewing very relaxing.
Thanks for the giveaway.
These projects look like fun. Can't wait to see all the tutorials.

I've been sewing since high school (I won't tell you how long that's been, lol). It's my creative outlet and cheaper than therapy!
ReplyDeleteI want to sew, and I've got myself a sewing machine, but NO FABRIC and NO PROJECTS. I can't wait to take your tutorials, I'm sure they're really good! mallory2000@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy sewing machine, although used is perhaps ill used and not truely given reign to its full potential. I have always dreamed of doing more. I am a small build person who is frequently challenged by the clothing available off the rack to my budget, and although I tackle it with gusto its never with aplomb. Now, with 5 children, equally challenged in the size department it is time I truely rose to the challenge of alterations done correctly. HELP! (Do you or do you know someone who does courses during school hours in the Naas area or at a person's home)!! Feeling decidedly stitched up, Clare.x
ReplyDeleteI worked at a fabric store when I went college and fell in love with fabric. I bought my first sewing machine then and I still have it today although I am going to donate it.
ReplyDeleteThis may sound silly but I love sewing because I love fabric. I love the designs, textures, and the different fibers. Sewing provides such a feeling of accomplishment for me too. I love using the things I make.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the idea of these tutorials as I really need to work on improving my sewing skills, thanks for organising this & also for the lovely giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. These tutorials are going to be great. I sewed a lot in my late teens/early twenties but then not much until the past few months.
ReplyDeleteI was going to comment saying that this looks brilliant BEFORE I saw it was a giveaway... almost didn't being contrary, but did want you to know I'll be following along and well done with all the organisation. :) (PS Murphy's law says I win this one)
ReplyDeleteI'm in!!! This is a brilliant idea, right up my street - thank you x
ReplyDeleteCount me in!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the awesome giveaway!
I'm a fairly new sewer and there's so much I still need to learn. Thanks for this great idea!
ReplyDeleteap_lemos (at) yahoo (dot) com
I'm so excited about this! I like to sew because it's like magic to me. I made that?! Wow.

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like lots of fun! Can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!!! I can't wait to check out all the creativity and tips!!
ReplyDeleteI looke forward to following along to see all the tutorials and projects. I am one of those new to sewing people and have an extremely limited fabric stash. Winning any scraps would be wonderful. Thanks for the chace.
ReplyDeleteI love scraps, but don,t have a ton- started quilting a few months ago as a project while the husband travelled for school. Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI'm a brand new reader with a brand new sewing machine and I'd love to take part!
ReplyDeleteegremontapple (at) gmail (dot) com

ReplyDeleteThank you for this give away. I am not new to quilting (about 5 years) but I have huge gaps in my knowledge and experience. I have learned mostly from online tutorials and trial and error. I always think one day I might join a group or guild but haven't taken those steps. I look forward to learning all that I can through this opportunity. I quilt b/c it makes me feel good. Does that even make sense?
ReplyDeleteI'm sooo looking forward to these tutorials! I just began quilting and am looking forward to tips in how to do it "right" lol. natalyazid(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI bought an Argos basic sewing machine last year but just inherited an old Riccar with much better control (and lots quieter). I have had a go at a few bags but I am looking to expand and improve my sewing skills was delighted to read you have set this up, thanks!
ReplyDeleteCraftywomble(at)blogspot(dot)com
Just found you and love your blog!! I am a new bee to quilting and look forward to learning lots from your teachings

Victoriarawley@yahoo.co.uk
I love sewing because of the end results and the joy of getting it right...first time lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway
Preparing for the day when my son asks me to make a quilt to replace the one you made for him! Useless in every way in the sewing dept and colour and taste challenged in putting things together - I think I'm headed for the back of the class but looking forward to it! niamhwar@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteYou have no idea how excited I am for this - I got a sewing machine as a present and finally can get to sew. I haven't sewed since highschool, but both sets of grandmothers sewed, and I'm sure my great grandmother was a seamstress in the war, so I'm feeling slightly in awe that I'm able to take part in something that they have done in generations past and put my own creative spin on things.
ReplyDeleteNot only this but it's my birthday on Monday too, and this would make a fantastic gift!! xzxxx
I'm new to quilting and would be MOST happy to have some scraps to play with. I haven't created very many of my own yet, though I had my first quilt start and finish this past year and I'm eager to get at it again.
ReplyDeletei've been teaching myself to sew for a little over a year now and i love it! i'm really excited to join in your tutorials-thanks so much!!!

Really looking forward to getting started I used to sew as a kid but am very much out of practise these days. I started to re learn how to knit last year and loved it so this years aim is to get cracking with some sewing. I just brought home my mums sewing machine. She bought it back in her 20's over 40 years ago now can't wait to see it getting usde again. At the mo I've no scraps to get me started so this would really help! Thanks
ReplyDeleteemmakav(at)gmail (dot) com
I am new to sewing (made 1 quilt, 1 quilt top, and 1 child's jacket) but really love it. I love the feeling of creating something myself, rather than buying it in a store. This will be great because when I sew, I make a lot of it up as I go.. it will be nice to actually learn to do things correctly!
ReplyDeletei love sewing because of the sense of accomplishment after finishing a custom project or pattern. Its amazing what can be sewn! I am self taught for a little over a year now and absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteI started sewing after I had my children. I wanted to be able to make them things that are from my heart and that they would hopefully pass on to their children.
ReplyDeleteLove the line up you have planned looks like it's going to be a big help for me.

I just love creating something from fabric and have been sewing since I was 8 years old. Thanks for a chance to win. esterling1923 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI love sewing because I like the idea of knowing I made it, created it, with love and hard work. Anything can be bought from a store, but when it's handmade and your energy and care goes into it, it really shows.
ReplyDeleteiamlilymunster (at) gmail (dot) com
Hi, am so glad to have come across your site! Am hoping to make a quilt this yeat but don't know where to start!!! Bring it on :)
ReplyDeleteI've been sewing for some time now. I look forward to the idea you share.

I love sewing because it allows you to take a piece of fabric and create something useful or something that you can share with others. Thanks for having a great giveaway and look forward to learning some stuff :)
ReplyDeleteI love getting to play with all the fabric I have and making colour choices that are happy next to each other - sewing it all together is the final bit of fun!
ReplyDeleteWonderful giveaway - I love sewing because it is my creative outlet and my way to be productive on a short scale (as opposed to the time it takes to raise kids :)
ReplyDeleteI hope I'll win :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm starting out and don't have much variety in my scraps. Thanks for organizing all the tutorials - they sound fun!
ReplyDeleteI've got scraps but they are boring! Would love to win some more!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea!
ReplyDeleteI'm just starting out, but I love sewing because I get to see things coming to life quickly - this happens slowly in my work so I like the instant gratification I get sewing! :)
I started sewing b/c it is so practical and fun and also allows me to be creative. I love that you are hosting this event, I have a good feeling that it will encourage a lot of people to take the plunge!
